Μost information about ancient Greek furniture come from the
representations that occur on the hundreds and thousands of vase
paintings and reliefs from the 8th century BC down that have come to
light. Ancient Greek furniture consisted of various kinds of stools,
couches, tables and chests. One basic category of ancient furniture were the various types of seats: the throne, usually provided with back and armrests, klismos, the light easy chair with curving back but without supports for the arms, thedifros, the backless stool with four perpendicular or crossed legs and the bench on which several people could seat. Very important furniture were the trapeza, which is the table, as well as the bed, thekline, and finally an amount of boxes for things to store, kibotia. The ancient names of all these furniture can be ascertained through the inscriptions and the mention of them by Greek writers from Homer down.
